From the bridge to the yard

Matteo Ferraro went to sea as a cadet from the nautical institute in Trieste and spent his first years on coastal tankers and ro-ro ferries in the Adriatic. He moved to large yachts as chief officer and then captain, running motor yachts out of the Riviera and the Croatian coast. Years of refits taught him how boats fail, and that the yard bill always tells the truth.

He trained as a surveyor after a refit where a hull that had passed its last survey turned out to have thin plate under every engine room tray. He gained his accreditation with the International Institute of Marine Surveying and founded EuroNautica in Trieste in 2013.

How the practice works

EuroNautica is small on purpose. Capt. Ferraro attends every survey we sign, and he writes every report. Specialist work, such as oil analysis at the laboratory, rigging inspection aloft or electrical testing on large systems, goes to people we have worked with for years, and their findings go into the dossier under their own names.

  • Pre-purchase condition and valuation surveys for motor and sailing yachts, 9 to 40 m.
  • Ultrasonic thickness surveys for steel and aluminium hulls.
  • Osmosis and moisture surveys before and after GRP bottom treatment.
  • Insurance condition surveys and damage surveys after grounding or collision.
  • Commercial charter compliance surveys for yachts entering paid charter.

Where we work

Most of our work is between Venice and Kotor, with regular trips to the Ionian islands. We know the yards in Monfalcone, Marina di Aurisina, Portorož, Izola, Pula, Punat, Šibenik, Split and Tivat, and which of them can lift a deep-keel sailing yacht at short notice. Travel within Friuli Venezia Giulia is included in our fee. Further afield, we charge travel at cost and say so in the quote.

What we will not do

We do not sell boats and we do not take commission from brokers, yards or sellers. The legal name of the company includes brokerage because it was registered to cover valuation and advisory work for buyers. If we are ever asked to value a boat we have an interest in, we will say no.
